The law of the jungle in Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro a city where drug gangs have a military like war with the law forces.
Rio de Janeiro was Brazil's capital until 1960, when Brasília took its place. The population of the City of Rio de Janeiro is about 6 million occupying an area of rughly 1,182 square kilometres (456.5 sq mi). The population of the greater metropolitan area is estimated at 11-13.5 million.
Rio has high crime rates, especially in poor areas dominated by drug lords.
Rio de Janeiro's police are low paid and ill-equipped, while the drug lords have created small armies from the young, poor, uneducated youth living in the slums and shanty towns known as favelas.
2016 Rio Olympic GamesRio de Janeiro was chosen to organize the 2016 Olympic Games, In a probable effort to clean the streets, the Brazilian authorities might have put in place strategies to reduce crime. These plans would push drug dealers to more confrontations with the authority.
Shooting down a helicopter In the latest clashes with police, drug gangs were able to shoot down a helicopter, this raise the question "if law enforcement loose any air advantage would they really be able to reduce crime ?"
and if the drug gangs acquire sophisticated weaponry, what would stop them from taking control of the whole city?
